Book Reflection: The Happiness Files

Reading The Happiness Files invited me to pause and reflect on my own life in a deeper way. One idea that stood out was the concept of being the “CEO” of your own life. At first, that felt like a heavy statement—because life is not always within our control. Unexpected challenges, hardships, and circumstances can shape our path in ways we didn’t choose.

At the same time, the book gently highlights something important: while we may not control everything that happens to us, we do have influence over how we respond. That perspective felt both grounding and empowering.

It made me reflect on the small but meaningful choices we make every day—reaching out for support, allowing ourselves to connect with others, or even taking a step toward something unfamiliar. These moments may seem simple, but they can shift the direction of our lives in powerful ways.

We are not meant to navigate life alone. Building community, seeking support, and allowing ourselves to be seen are not signs of weakness—they are acts of courage.

I was reminded of a story I once heard about a young woman who experienced a very difficult and unsupported childhood. As an adult, she faced homelessness and described the fear and uncertainty of sleeping on the streets. Yet, even in those moments, she sought out resources—going to the library, building a resume, and slowly creating opportunities for herself. Over time, she found employment and stability. What stood out most was her deep sense of gratitude and her willingness to keep moving forward despite everything she had endured.

Her story offered a powerful perspective: even in the most challenging circumstances, small steps and access to support can begin to create change.

To me, being the “CEO” of your life doesn’t mean having complete control—it means allowing yourself space to slow down, reflect, and make intentional choices when you can. It’s recognizing that even small decisions matter, and that they can influence not only your life, but the lives of those around you.

In my work with clients, I hope to carry this perspective forward. My goal is to help individuals recognize their capacity for choice—no matter how small those choices may feel—and to support them in making decisions that align with the life they want to build.

What would it look like to begin seeing your choices, even the small ones, as meaningful steps toward the life you want?
