When you are feeling overwhelmed, consider a few of these options to calm yourself down.
*Pay attention to how your are feeling. Are you having racing thoughts, beginning to feel hot, have sweaty palms?
*Take a few deep breaths. Scott Dehorty of Delphi Behavioral Health says taking deep breath sends a message to your brain, causing a positive feedback loop reinforcing your fight or flight response. He goes onto say that's why taking long, deep calming breaths disrupts that loop and helps you calm down.
*Step outside, take a walk get some fresh air.
*Put in your earphones and isten to some music.
*If you are able to, listen to your music and dance.
*Move your body. Take a walk, try yoga and/or lift weights.
*Try an relaxing technique such as meditation or progressive muscle relaxation.
*Call a supportive friend.
Learn what triggers you to feel overwhelmed. Once you begin to notice what triggers you, come up with a plan or avoid these triggers. With practice, you may begin to notice that you are able to remain calm in stressful times.
