If you have ever had a pet, you know the great joy it can bring to your life. According to a research survey conducted by the Human-Animal Band Research Institute, 74% of pet owners reported mental health improvements. Petting and playing with an animal can reduce stress-related hormones. An animal can increase levels of serotonin and dopamine in your body. These are hormones that calm and relax the nervous system. It helps reduce feelings of loneliness, blood pressure, and stress. Having a pet in your life can increase self-esteem, happiness, and self-confidence and provide a sense of purpose. According to Psychology Today (2020), watching fish swimming around in an aquarium can be a calming and relaxing experience. Seniors who are lonely benefit greatly from having a pet to care for and love. it makes them feel needed.


Pets can teach children responsibility because they require regular care and feeding. Dogs are great because they allow the children and parents to get exercise and spend time together while taking the dog out for a walk. Walking is one of the best forms of exercise and has many benefits. When I take my dog out, I usually see the same people walking their dogs or walking alone. I like to think of us as a community. It gives us time to have short chats about simple things such as the weather, holidays, my dog, or upcoming events. According to Plos One (2016), pet owners are 60% more likely to get to know people in their neighborhood, promoting social interaction and reducing feelings of loneliness.


Pets are also amazing for the older population. According to the American Health Association (2021), adults over 50 report that having pets creates less stress, a better sense of purpose, and a better social connection. “People recognize that there is something special about bonds between humans and their pets,” said APA President Rebecca Brendel, M.D., J.D. “The animals we bring into our lives and our families play many roles from non-judgmental companions that we love to key partners in reducing our stress and anxiety. Americans recognize that our relationships with our pets can have noticeable benefits for our overall mental health.
