My Take on Self-Care

My Take on Self-Care

If you ask around, you will notice that self-care has multiple meanings to different people. As a working mother and a wife, I understand how setting aside time to take care of yourself seems nice, but impossible. I can’t even admit to using self-care when my children were younger. I just did not have the time or the energy. However, throughout the years I have learned how important putting yourself first truly is.

If you think back to your childhood, think about how your parents took care of themselves. We learn how to take care of ourselves from our parents or whomever raised us. If they did not put any self-care practices in place or implied taking care of yourself was silly, then their children most likely believed that caring for themselves was not important.

I think of self-care as activities you intentionally do so that you are able to function well on a daily basis. Using self-care daily can be more beneficial than waiting until you are extremely stressed or overwhelmed. Listed below are a few examples of self-care.

Examples of self care :

*Scheduling meals for the week.

*Making a healthy meal at home

*Taking a relaxing bubble bath uninterrupted

*Scheduling and attending a physical examination and/or dental appointment

*Reading a book on a subject that sparks your interests

*Getting out of the house and letting the sun touch your skin

*Enjoying a massage or pedicure.

*Calling or sending a text message to a friend or a relative

When you choose to take care of yourself, you choose to make good decisions for yourself, your family and your community.

What two self care activities are you committed to doing this week?
