Exercise & Self-Care

Written by Cybill Vargas on September 5, 2023

Exercise is an important part of your self-care. Being about to move your body is something you should be grateful for each day. When we are young, we never think about how simple things like running, skipping, stretching is a gift. Exercise provides many benefits including helping to manage weight, improving mood, reducing the risk and symptoms of chronic diseases, strengthening muscles and bones and increasing energy.

Exercise increases endorphins which are a type of neurotransmitters released by the brain to promote pleasure, reduce stress and improve mood. Physical activities such as gardening, running, brisk walking and aerobics can stimulate brain chemicals that leave you feeling happier and more relaxed. It’s amazing to think about how being active can help you through a rough, stressful day.

Exercise boosts energy. Regular physical activity can improve your muscle strength and boost your endurance. Do your own experiment, after going to the gym or going on a walk, start to notice how you are feeling. Keep a journal and compare those days to the days when you come home, watch television and eat sugary snacks. See which days you have the most energy. I’m not judging. I do both, but I do notice how much better I feel when I choose to take a walk with my dog and eat healthy.
